A Call to Fast — And to Listen
As we enter this season of prayerful discernment and listening, we are inviting our church to recover an ancient Christian practice: fasting, always joined to attentive listening to God.
Fasting is not about willpower, spiritual heroics, or earning God’s favor. Scripture and the Christian tradition are clear: fasting is a way of making space—quieting our appetites, interruptions, and distractions so that we can more clearly hear the voice of the Lord.
Jesus assumed his followers would fast, saying, “When you fast…” (Matthew 6:16), and he taught that after his ascension, “then they will fast” (Matthew 9:15). Fasting is not commanded, but it is expected, invited, and deeply formative.
